Appellation:
VQA Niagara Peninsula
About This Wine:
Our Niagara Peninsula Pinot Noir originates from a selection of vineyards, concentrating on our own vineyards along the Beamsville and Twenty Mile Benches of the Niagara Escarpment. Here, a combination of elevation, proximity to Lake Ontario’s moderating breezes and stony, clay-limestone soils bring aromatics and structure to the wine. We have supplemented these sites with fruit from the Niagara River appellation, where gravelly, shale-laced clays, along with a slightly warmer, earlier-ripening season contribute rich fruit and soft textures to the blend. In the final cuvée, we think there’s a terrific balance of intensity and finesse that beautifully represents the terroir that we have chosen to work with.

Vintage Notes:
Following generally propitious spring weather, the summer of 2008 turned cooler and wetter than normal. However, a dry sunny spell in late August and the first part of September allowed for the early ripening Pinot Noir grape to make up for lost ground. The end of September brought some precipitation and therefore rot pressure, but was punctuated by steady spells of clear and sunny daytime weather. Though he conditions were challenging, Pinot can flourish under cooler, variable weather, and through rigorous selection and selective hand-harvesting at peak ripeness, 2008 has produced some of our most expressive, ready-to-drink Pinots ever.

Tasting Notes:
On the nose, aromas of clove spice and Maraschino cherries predominate, with hints of tilled earth, cinnamon and clove in behind. The palate is medium in body with a round, juicy feel up front.. A core of velvety tannins enveloped by sweet berry fruit and a light mineral note emerge in the middle. These tannins taper smoothly toward the back, drawing rich fruit and spicy nuances long onto the finish. This is a well-structured, polished Pinot that exhibits terrific balance from start to finish.

Ageability:
Quite supple and approachable on release, this vintage will be at its best between 2010 and 2013, while retaining the structure and freshness to hold until at least 2015.
