Appellation:
VQA Beamsville Bench
About This Wine:
We make this wine in small quantities from two parcels of Gewürztraminer vines at Cave Spring Vineyard totaling just 3.6 acres (1.4 hectares). The vines are cropped at a very low level to encourage ripeness and concentration. As well, our vineyard’s elevation high up on the Beamsville Bench overlooking nearby Lake Ontario provides for the constant circulation of warm fall breezes that prevent frost and allow for a slow, gradual and extended ripening period. All of this adds up to a single vineyard Gewürztraminer that is powerfully aromatic, remarkably intense in flavour and very rich in texture.

Two blocks of vines at Cave Spring Vineyard ranging in age from 16 to 26 years

VINTAGE:
Cool conditions during the spring and summer of 2009 left Gewürztraminer relatively under-ripe in early September. However, the dry, warm and sunny conditions that prevailed between mid-September and late October allowed for a remarkable acceleration of ripening. Cool conditions in late October and early November preserved the fruit and allowed for a further concentration of aromas and flavours to develop in the berries. This vintage ranks with 2006 and 1997 as one of the best we’ve ever had for this variety. Harvest Date- Nov. 12

Tasting Notes:
This vintage is nothing short of explosive on the nose, with intense aromas of Asian pear, white peach and rosewater alongside hints of lychee nut and orange blossom. The palate is crisp and quite dry up front, yet very full and unctuous in the middle, showing highly extracted flavours of ripe, spiced pear and citrus. The finish remains rich in feel with persistent ginger-orange peel flavours, closing with a mild yet vibrant balance of acidity.
