2017 Cabernet Franc

VQA Niagara Peninsula

About This Wine:
This wine originates from selected Niagara Peninsula vineyards situated in close proximity to the south shore of Lake Ontario. In these areas, the combination of limestone and shale-laced clays, elevation and moderating on-shore breezes combine to capture the distinctive mint-berry character typical of Cabernet Franc in our region.

Tasting Notes:
On the nose, juicy red cherry and blackcurrant fruit come to the fore, with notes of eucalyptus, tobacco leaf, cinnamon and mint in behind. The palate is medium-to-full in body with firm tannins and sour cherry fruit up front, nicely balanced in the middle by ripe cassis fruit and round, supple textures around the edges. A juicy thread of acidity is nicely integrated throughout, giving way to an intense and plush finish of dark berries, black pepper and coffee grinds.

Reviews & Accolades:
Wine Align: This is a fine value in modern, textbook Niagara cabernet franc. It may not have the depth and polish to score higher, but I love how it avoids sweetness at this commercial price and goes straight to cabernet franc essentials of raspberry, fresh herbs, light tobacco and vague earthiness. It is mid-weight (even at 13.5%) with perfect acid balance and slightly gritty tannin. It delivers a gently rustic, outdoorsy feel that is so very Ontario. The length is very good. 89 points, David Lawrason
